 India and England will be playing against
each other for the first time in a Test at this
venue.
Out of the eight Tests played at this
ground, India has won two - against Sri Lanka and
Zimbabwe, and lost once each to New Zealand and
Australia. The remaining four matches were drawn.
In all eight Tests, the toss-winning
captain decided to bat first and all Tests lasted
for five full days.
A side that scored over 300 in the first
innings has remained unbeaten. The team that did so
won twice and the game was drawn thrice. Of the
three instances of a side not mustering 300, the
concerned XI lost twice and drew once.
Sachin Tendulkar has the distinction of
scoring the highest number of centuries (three) ,
while Zimbabwean Andy Flower has notched up the
highest individual score - 232 not out in 2000-01.
There have been a dozen instances of a
bowler claiming five or more wickets in an innings.
Ten of those hauls have been bagged by spinners,
with India's Maninder Singh being the only to take
ten wickets in a match. Australia's Jason Gillespie
and Sri Lanka's Ravindra Pushpakumara are the only
two medium - fast bowlers to have taken take a
'five-for' at this venue.
Indian leg spinner Anil Kumble enjoys the
distinction of claiming the most career wickets -
18 at a rate of 28.27 from four matches .
All four matches which have produced
results , have been decided by big margins : twice
by innings , once by 342 runs and other by 167 runs
.
In two test matches in which India were
defeated , their combined total in both innings was
less than 400 runs . |
