The Indian Cricket team is not particularly
renowned for winning series away from home. Indeed,
the 3-2 triumph in the one-day series and the 2-1
win in the Test series in Pakistan last year was
India's first 'twin' victory on foreign soil since
1986.
New English School, Bandra (Mumbai) certainly
looked a lot more comfortable managing and
conquering the 'away' blues than the Indian team,
in a three-day cricket quiz against Don Bosco
school, Matunga, organised by Cricketforindia.com,
India's first cricket coaching website.
The quiz that pitted two of Mumbai's leading
'cricket' schools against each other, was held from
21st February to 23rd February 2005 in the
Secondary School AV Hall, Don Bosco, Matunga,
Mumbai.
On all three days, a team of four from the 'hosts'
was pitted against a quartet representing the
'visitors' in a titanic tussle to determine which
of the two schools 'knew' about cricket as well as
they 'played' it.
New English School won on the first two days to
take the 'series', while Don Bosco snatched a
comprehensive but consolation win on the last day.
Each of the three quizzes comprised five rounds
that tested the participants' cricketing knowledge.
Questions were posed to an enthusiastic audience at
regular intervals as well, with students who
answered correctly winning a special 'Cricketforindia'
T-shirt as a prize.
Needless to say, those who participated in the
actual quiz also received prizes. The winners on
each day received an attractive Cricketforindia
trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 800. The losers
received a cash prize of Rs. 400.
The presentations were made by Cricketforindia's
panelists - Chief Advisor Ashok Mankad, Polly
Umrigar, Dr. Aijaz Ashai and Piloo Reporter, all of
whom interacted with the participants and audience,
and encouraged them to follow the game. Ritika
Hiranandani, Director, Cricketforindia.com,
supervised the proceedings and Devendra Prabhudesai,
Content Manager, Cricketforindia.com, was the
quizmaster.
New English scraped through on day one with 97
points to Don Bosco's 90. They then swept to a huge
win on day two, amassing 160 points to Don Bosco's
85. The hosts finally prevailed in the third and
final encounter, with 185 points to New English's
80.
