The Legends of Indian and Mumbai cricket

The previous twelve months witnessed four Test matches in which the Indian team did not comprise a single player from Mumbai. Recent events suggest that the situation on the domestic front is as bad. The just-concluded Irani Trophy game between 2004-05 Ranji champs Railways and the Rest of India featured only one Mumbai player - all-rounder Ramesh Powar .

It was the tenth instance of Mumbai having only one or no representatives in the Rest of India side that plays the annual Irani Trophy.

Season Venue Opponents Mumbai player
2005-06 Delhi Railways Ramesh Powar
2002-03 Delhi Railways Wasim Jaffer
2001-02 Nagpur Baroda Vinayak Mane
1999-00 Bangalore Karnataka Nilesh Kulkarni
1996-97 Bangalore Karnataka Paras Mhambrey
1993-94 Ludhiana Punjab Sanjay Manjrekar
1991-92 Faridabad Haryana Vinod Kambli
1990-91 Bangalore Bengal Ravi Shastri
1988-89 Chennai Tamil Nadu Nil
1978-79 Bangalore Karnataka Dilip Vengsarkar
1974-75 Pune Karnataka Sunil Gavaskar

Note: On the other hand, the Irani Trophy game in 1982-83 season between 1981-82 Ranji winners Delhi and the Rest involved as many as five players from Mumbai - Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Ravi Shastri , Balwinder Singh Sandhu and Zulfiqar Parkar.
