Pathan's record that went unnoticed

Irfan Pathan

India's promising medium-pace bowler Irfan Pathan who is going great guns in international cricket over a period of last one year, has achieved a milestone that has gone unnoticed. Until now, that is!

During the recent Dhaka Test against Bangladesh, he captured eleven wickets - his first haul of ten or more victims in a Test - of which as many as seven were dismissed leg-before. It gives an idea of his accuracy over line and length. Only five other bowlers in the 125 year-old history of test cricket have the distinction of claiming seven or more lbws in a Test match. Incidentally , all of them have achieved the feat in the last two-and-a-half decades.

Details are as follows:

LBW Wkts % LBW Players Opponents Venue Season
8 11 72.73 Mohammad Zahid (Pak) New Zealand Rawalpindi 1996-97
8 14 57.14 Chaminda Vaas (SL) West Indies Colombo 2001-02
7 11 63.64 Richard Hadlee (NZ) West Indies Dunedin 1979-80
7 12 58.33 Abdul Qadir (Pak) England Lahore 1987-88
7 13 53.85 Waqar Younis (Pak) Zimbabwe Karachi 1993-94
7 11 63.64 Irfan Pathan (Ind) Bangladesh Dhaka 2004-05

Note: All the bowlers except Hadlee won the Man of the Match award, probably because such an award had been earmarked for that Test at Dunedin in the 1979-80 season
