Australian captain Ricky Ponting has started the New Year on a grand
note. The first Test of 2006, the third of the ongoing series
between Australia and South Africa, is his 100th.
Ponting also ended 2005 on a remarkable high. He is only the fourth
batsman in cricketing history after Brian Lara, Greg Chappell and
Vivian Richards to top the run aggregates in both Tests and ODIs in
the same calendar year. Just for the record, there are also four
bowlers who hold a similar distinction in terms of wickets taken in
both versions of the game.
