Majid Khan, former Pakistani captain, stated last
week that Pakistan had employed the services of as
many as 40 debutants in Test cricket in the
previous four years. Actually, this is not true.
They have capped 26 newcomers since January 1 ,
2000; that is in the last five years . In addition
to Pakistan , there are three teams, namely India ,
West Indies and Zimbabwe with 26 Test debutants
each . Bangladesh hold the record with 40 players,
but then they made their Test debut in 2000 and
hence the figure is understandable . On the other
hand of the scale, the world champion Australia has
had the least number of debutants on their
roll-call - just eight. This is reflected in their
outstanding track record .
